A MINIMALIST SCULPTOR SUCH AS....

" GIOVANNI  GEOCOMETTI " 1901-1966   

AND  

A NORMAL  BODY FORM.....

LAFFANKI'S USE OF

"ARTIST'S LICENCE " HAS ALLOWED

HIM TO TAKE FROM BOTH STYLES OF ARTISTS WORK

TO MINIMISE.......SOME ASPECTS OF THE BODY.

& YET TO ACCENTUATE  THE POWER & FORM

THAT IS THE TRUE POWER  OF.....

METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION:-

THIS IS  THE METAL ARMATURE ON WHICH

  THE SCULPTURE HAS BEEN "LAIDUP" BY HAND..

  

 

             THE SCULPTURE WAS ORIGINALY STARTED ON 1st. AUGUST 2012.... 

SO HAS BEEN 2 FULL YEARS IN THE MAKING

  DUE TO ILLNESS.... LAFFANKI SUFFERED A HEART ATTACK

22nd. SEPT.  2013 & WAS UNABLE CONTINUETO WORK

ON  IT AGAIN UNTILL THE 3rd. OF JUNE  2014 !

& ONLY COMPLETED WORK ON 8th. SEPTEMBER. 2014.

AND HAS TAKEN AN UNBELIEVABLE AMOUNT OF TIME

INFACT ...TO MAKE....HAS TAKEN...... 

OVER  2,050 HOURS IN TIME ALONE

 YES !...THAT IS CORRECT ! ! !

NOW:- AS TO THE  COST OF MAKING THE SCULPTURE ?

 WELL IF YOU CARE TO WORK IT OUT THE LABOUR

@ THE MINIMUM HOURLY RATE

PLUS THE COSTS OF ALL THE MATERIALS.....

& IT BECAME A VERY STEEP LEARNING CURVE.......

FOR THE FINE DETAILED WORK REQUIRED IN

CUTTING BACK THE HANDS ; NOSE ; EARS ; EYES

THE LIPS ; WORKING UP THE SHOES

& THE THE ALL INPORTANT "LADYBIRD"...

A HIGH SPEED ELECTRIC  "TREMEL" WITH

DIAMOND CUTTERS HAD TO BE USED......

 

AND IF IT WAS NOT RIGHT TO KEEP

CUTTING BACK & BUILDING AGAIN & AGAIN

4 ,5, OR MORE TIMES UNTIL IT CAME RIGHT ! ! !

FIRST OF ALL LAFFANKI HAD TO CONSTRUCT   

THE 3/4 LIFE SIZE ARMATURE

(  MADE OF A SELF-ASSEMBLY FRAME WORK OF

CAST IRON FITTINGS HELD IN PLACE BY GRUB-SCREWS )

ON TO MILD STEEL TUBES......  

WITH THE AID THE AID OF AN ALLEN KEY.

  IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO GET  THESE TIGHT ENOUGH.....

TO MAKE THE STRUCTURE STABLE !

THIS CAUSED THE FIRST BIG PROBLEM ! ! !

NOW FOR THE NEXT BIG PROBLEM......

IT WAS ALSO NOT POSSIBLE TO WELD OR BRAZE

THE 2  DISSIMILAR METALS TO MAKE....

THE FRAME RIGID ; AS THIS WOULD CAUSE EVEN

MORE PROBLEMS...........SO LETS HAVE A  "LOOK SEE "

ON THE INTERNET.........& AFTER SEVERAL DEADENDS ......

FOUND A FIRM IN USA.......WHO MADE ARC BRAZING RODS.

SO AS THERE WAS NO UK. STOCKIST HAD IT IMPORT THEM ! !

..........O..........

NEXT PROBLEM WAS TO FIND SOMEONE WHO WOULD

 HAVE A GO AT THE TASK.......OF ARC BRAZING.

THE FIRST 8 APPROACHED EITHER  WENT  DEATHLY WHITE

OR FUMED & MUTTERED & SPLUTTED &

GAVE THE IMPRESSION OF AN IMPENDING

HEART  ATTACK........ ! ! !-

FOUND HIM....VERY HELPFUL & A GOOD JOB, WELL DONE !

** SO  GO BACK TO THE PHOTO OF THE ARMATURE

ABOVE.....TO HAVE ANOTHER LOOK.

 ALL THIS TOOK ABOUT 3 MONTHS......

NOW.....THE REAL WORK COULD START !

LAFFANKI WENT DOWN THE VERY TIME CONSUMING ROAD

OF LAYING-UP THE MATERIAL BY HAND......

THE MATERIAL USED WAS A RESIN WITH A HARDNER &

A LIGHT WEIGHT FILLER TO ADD BULK TO THE MIX.

USING ARTIST PALLET KNIVES (SEE TOOLS ,ABOVE)

IT BECAME  A CASE OF BUILD-UP & CUTTING BACK

WITH JOINERS CHISELS & REPEATING THE

PROCESS AGAIN & AGAIN & AGAIN..........

& 20 OR 30 TIMES ; WORKING UP A SMALL AREA

AT A TIME UNTILL THE REQUIRED RESULT

& SHAPE STARTED TO COME TOGETHER.......

& THEN MOVING ON TO ANOTHER PART.....

THE HEAD & EYES CAUESED A LOT OF TROUBLES

AS DID THE HANDS (COULD NOT GET THEM RIGHT &

HAD TO CUT THEM OFF & START AGAIN A FEW TIMES

BUT I DID GET THEM RIGHT IN THE END )

SO TIME WENT ON AS IT DOES & THE SCULPTURE

TOOK FORM & SHAPE & GREW UNTILL ......

IT BECAME THE FINISHED WORK THAT LAFFANKI

WAS SATISFIED WITH...........

 

AND ONLY THEN COULD LAFFANKI

ADD THE FINISH COATS OF PURE BRONZE, 

POWDER WITH WITH A RESIN MIX & GETTING

THE RATIOS CORRECT WAS ANOTHER

NIGHTMARE ,WITH 5 TO 8  OR MORE COATS 

( EVEN UPTO  10 OR 12 IN PLACES )

REQUIRED & RUBBING DOWN WITH EMERY PAPER

BY HAND BECAME DIFFICULT ! !

THE HARD WAY.......LIKE EVERONE ELSE......

MAKING AN ORIGINAL SCULPTURE FROM SCRATCH

THEN MAKING A MOULD & CASTING IT IN.........

COLD CAST BRONZE FOR THE MASS-MARKET;

OR HAVE JUST A LIMMITED EDITION OF.....

A FEW CAST IN BRONZE BY A FOUNDRY.

AS LAFFANKI HAS SAID BEFORE...........

BUT THESE ARE NOT ORIGINALS .ONLY COPIES!

BUT THEN AFTER A LOT OF WORK.......

THE SCULPTOR THEN CHUCKED OUT HIS ORIGINAL   ?
